Sports massage

What is it

Sports massage is a therapeutic technique focused on the needs of athletes and those who practice physical activities. Its objective is to prevent and treat muscle injuries, improve flexibility, promote relaxation and optimize physical performance. Sports massage involves the use of vigorous and specific movements, adapted to the body's demands during physical exertion, aiming to accelerate muscle recovery and prevent future damage.

Indications

Sports massage is indicated for relieving muscle pain, sports injuries (such as strains, contractures and sprains), muscle tension, physical preparation before intense activities and muscle recovery after exercise. It is particularly useful for athletes, but can also be applied to anyone who performs demanding physical activities, such as runners, bodybuilders and other athletes.

Benefits

Among the main benefits of sports massage are pain relief and reduction of muscle tension, which promotes greater flexibility and mobility. It also improves blood and lymphatic circulation, which speeds up the muscle recovery process and reduces fluid retention and swelling. Additionally, massage helps reduce the risk of injury, improves athletic performance and contributes to physical and mental well-being.

Contraindications

Sports massage is not recommended for acute injuries (such as fractures, lacerations or injuries with intense inflammation), fever or infectious diseases. If the patient has a specific medical condition or is recovering from a recent injury, it is important to consult a doctor before performing the massage. The technique should also be avoided in areas with active inflammation or infection.

How is done

Sports massage is performed with vigorous and deep movements, with the aim of penetrating the deepest layers of muscles and connective tissues. The movements include kneading, pressure, stretching and friction, being applied specifically to areas that need attention, such as tense or injured muscles. The therapist adapts the pressure and intensity of the massage according to the patient's needs, always focusing on pain relief and muscle recovery.

Peridity

The frequency of sports massage varies depending on the patient's needs, but it is generally performed before and/or after intense physical activities, for preparation and recovery. During periods of intense training or competition, treatment can be done several times a week. For effective recovery, it may be necessary to perform regular massage sessions over time.

Care

Sports massage is a more intense technique, aimed at athletes and physically active people, which aims to prepare the muscles for physical effort or aid in post-workout recovery. It promotes the release of muscle tension, improves circulation and eliminates toxins. Because it acts deeply on the tissues, it can cause localized sensitivity and requires adequate care to ensure recovery and comfort.

Avoid direct sun exposure for 24 hours, especially in the massaged areas, as the skin may present slight redness and temporary sensitivity.

Do not apply makeup, deodorants or products with alcohol to the treated areas (if it involves areas such as the neck or chest), to avoid causing burning or irritation.

Apply gentle and soothing moisturizers after the session, helping to nourish the skin and reduce any sensation of friction caused by the intense massage.

Avoid intense physical exercise for 4 to 6 hours after the session to allow the body to assimilate the muscular effect of the massage and avoid overloading.

Drink plenty of water to speed up the elimination of toxins mobilized during the procedure and minimize the risk of delayed muscle soreness.

Watch for persistent redness, localized pain or bruising — although uncommon, these reactions should be reported to the professional so that the intensity can be adjusted in the next sessions.

Comments

After sports massage, it is common to experience mild muscle pain, known as delayed onset muscle soreness, especially in areas that have been manipulated the most. This is normal and usually goes away after a few hours or days. Pain is a sign that the muscles are recovering and adjusting to the treatment. Adequate hydration is recommended after the session to help eliminate toxins and facilitate muscle recovery.
